Ramsey Campbell if you like interesting horror fiction that's not zomgzombies all over again.
Dan Simmons' Summer of Night was one of the most interseting pseudo-horror books I've read in ages.
Anne McCaffrey and Marion Zimmer Bradley if you like sci-fi done by kickass ladies.

The first few books in the Archie/Gretchen series by Chelsea Cain are pretty decent. Sadly, only the first two/three are good.
Oliver Pötzsch's Hangman's Daughter series is amazing.

Guy Gavriel Kay's The Fionaver Tapestry for fantasy.

Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicles also for fantasy, there's two books so far and they are amazing, just amazing.

Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series is really great. I love it, absolutely. It's a mixture of horror/fantasy with modern elements. Magical realism, I suppose.

Now this next series can be a bit well.... depressing.

The Seafort Saga by David Feintuch. It's science fiction but not hard sci-fi. When I describe it to friends, I describe it as the Navy in space with some religious undertones (nothing too bad, it's just a subplot) and politics. If you're interested, give it a try, it's one of my favourite series.

Navy in space...so basically like a gundam novel minus the giant fighting humanoid robots? 8u
